Star Wars: Expanded Universe

Beyond the Films

I joked about writing L/M for Ship Manifesto myself a few weeks ago. But I'm way too bitter and pissy about most of canon and fanon. :D

Did you originally believe that Luke and Mara would get together? Or would they stay enemies?

I wanted it to happen, but I assumed it wouldn't, because I thought that would be more complicated a relationship than the EU is capable of handing.

Alas, I was right. I'm one of those L/M fans that's a bit upset by the whitewashing of VOTF and "Everyone loves Mara!" tone of the NJO.

What interested me aboutr L/M is their OBVIOUSLY not perfect for each other. It's not a happily ever after kind of situation.

What is the most important thing that keeps them together?

In the books? Beats me. NJO Mara's overwhelming Mary Sueness?

They do work well together as a team, which we are anvilled with in VOTF and SQ. But I believe there's also an issue of balance. Pairing holier-than-thou Jedi Luke with snarky Mara gives them a great give and take.

Do you believe that they will stay together?

Probably. But this is one of those things I can't discuss without referencing my overgrown plot bunnies.

Do you think that them being Jedi gives them a better chance of a succesful marriage than, say, Han and Leia? Or could it just complicate things?

I think it would make the relationship harder. I mean, think about it... Do you really want a relationship where your mate can read your mind?

Fanfic recs... Oh, I can do that.

Stuff - Best L/M ever. This story totally ruined me for canon. It's a pre-VOTF example of why I thought they should have gotten together. READ IT OMG READ IT. These are actual, complicated people.

The Long Road Home. Non-snarky L/M fans like it. Not bad, for mush.

New Beginnings - Dark Empire AU, has some nice L/M moments

Angela Jade has some good stuff - her Missing Moment series is great, and she writes decent NC-17 stuff too:

So a Princess and an Assassin Walk into a Bar... - This one's kinda dead, but it's got some great awkward L/M stuff. Plus, Leia and Mara are hilarious.

Thanks for all that. Will read through some of those fics today and see what I think. Oddly, I dont read much SW fanfic (although I have written one small one). Dunno why. *shrugs*

BTW, I have friended you as well. I figured if you like Luke and Mara that much you've gotta be pretty cool! :)

I'm not your average L/M shipper. There's a lot of mush in this aspect of fandom, and it both frightens and confuses me.

But hey, if you can take the snark, welcome to Duncsville. ;)

Bring on the snark :) Seriously, it's nice to find someone that doesn't always think that every fandom couple ends with happily ever after. Doesn't happen in real life - shouldn't happen in fandom!

Did you originally believe that Luke and Mara would get together? Or would they stay enemies?

I always thought they would get together eventually. Even when she loathed him they still made a great team. Zahn himself said (somewhere) that Mara was written as a foil for Luke.

What is the most important thing that keeps them together?

Unswerving loyalty. When they trust people they do so with the fullness of their heart.

Do you believe that they will stay together?

Absolutely! They're evenly matched.

Do you think that them being Jedi gives them a better chance of a succesful marriage than, say, Han and Leia? Or could it just complicate things?

Mmm...I wouldn't say better chance, and I wouldn't say worse. Being Jedi means they have different advantages and challenges both.

Did you originally believe that Luke and Mara would get together? Or would they stay enemies?
To be honest, I hated Mara Jade when she was first introduced. Heir to the Empire was the first novel I read (right after it came out), and anybody who wanted to kill Luke was my enemy. At the end of Dark Force Rising, however, I wanted them to get together. (Keep in mind, I was 12 or so at the time, lol). When I read the line about Han thinking Luke looked liked he just lost his best friend, I knew they would get together. I loved the end of The Last Command, because Zahn didn't get them together, but left their relationship open. I was a bit disappointed when the next books, the Jedi Academy Trilogy, basically ignored Mara. I lost hope they would get together until I heard Zahn was writing new books. I actually knew Luke and Mara were getting married before I read the books, and while I was ecstatic they got engaged, I would have liked more of an exploration of their relationship in the books.

What is the most important thing that keeps them together?
I agree that their personalities balance out very well, and that they are extremely loyal to each other. I think they can understand each other in a way not many people understand, and they appreciate all aspects of each other, including the bad parts. Plus, they treat each other like regular people.

Do you believe that they will stay together?
Yes.

Do you think that them being Jedi gives them a better chance of a succesful marriage than, say, Han and Leia? Or could it just complicate things?
I think their force bond helps them understand each other and allows them to listen to the other and consider their feelings, instead of just getting angry and not trying to fix the problem.

I agree with the suggestion of Angela Jade's fanfiction. She explores their relationship more than the authors have. Although I enjoyed much of the NJO, I agree that they kind of glossed over Mara's personality. I wanted to see more of the kind of Mara that did get pissed, like in The Unifying Force. I really enjoyed Survivor's Quest (yay Zahn!), and am glad Zahn made Mara question herself and her committment to the Jedi.
